The works by Barbara Wijnveld (1972) are painted in primary colours only. Wijnveld uses diluted paint,  which is applied in transparent layers. The build-up of these thin layers creates a full spectrum of colours with much variation of intensity. In her paintings Wijnveld merges her self-portrait with the portraits of cultural icons, like Mona Lisa, Charley Toorop or Betty Page. The artist projects their characteristics on her self-portrait, thus exploring new aspects of herself.
