Recently I create my paintings according to some main questions

Till what extent can a painter be aware of what he or she paints at the moment he or she is painting is the first question in my work. How much can a contemporary painter be fully aware of the things he is painting at that moment? However this is not what I am considering in my most recent paintings. I am considering how much I can understand of what I am doing at the moment I am painting. I think this is an important responsibility of the contemporary painter. Painting in itself is simple, however to make a painting with you full understanding is not at all easy. You have to know exactly what you are painting. You have to control your technique and skills in service of the idea or subject. One of the most important responsibilities of contemporary painters is to have insight in their paintings.

The second question I ask myself is what the relation between material, subject en technique is. What are the suitable materials and techniques for each specific painting. The possibility to choose from a variety of materials and techniques gives freedom. However you have to know why you choose this specific technique or material. The freedom of choosing a technique or material has to be in comparison to your knowledge and qualities of the materials and skills. In the past a certain knowledge and skills of materials and techniques were required. This is bounded to the Japanese history of arts and crafts. To integrate skills and theory into each other is my task as a Japanese painter in The Netherlands. This question asks for another question: what the relation between freedom and restriction in my paintings?

The last important question that is present in my work deals with my personal background. How can I integrate my personal background as Japans in my paintings?  It is not always necessary to have this visually present. However it is important to be aware of my current reality. Awareness of my personal background gives me clearness  about my position in the art world of this moment.

These are the three main questions my work deals with.
